The Purpose of UMW
The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose PURPOSE is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
Circles
All members meet in general gatherings at Clemson UMC several times during the year. Listed below are the smaller groups called Circles. They meet each month, several in member’s homes, others at the church.
Miriam Circle
Miriam Circle meets the 2nd Sunday of each month at 4pm, September–May. They usually meet at the church. Miriam Circle‘s on-going project is Helping Hands of Clemson. The Circle gives the children of Helping Hands a Thanksgiving Dinner/Party every November. The youth of CUMC usually help with the games at this party. Three to four times a year they deliver boxes filled with personal items such as toothbrushes, combs, soap, shampoo, a Bible, and pencils to Helping Hands children. Miriam Circle has a Ladies Night Out at a local restaurant once each month. The membership ranges in ages from 30 to 60. New members are always welcome. Contact: Susan Stepp, 653-5722
Eve Circle
Eve Circle meets the 2nd Thursday of each month, September–May, 7:30pm, at the home of a member. Meetings usually include; Easter baskets for Wesley students; service to a time of fellowship as well as a program which sometimes include reports on mission trips. Ongoing service projects include Easter Baskets for Wesley Students, CCDC and support of mission projects of the church. New members are always welcome. Contact: Cairen Withington, 653-9878
Abigail-Dorcas Circle
Abigail-Dorcas Circle meets in homes of members on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30pm, September through May. The membership ranges in ages from 45 to 80. Each year the Circle adopts a service project on which to work. If you would like to attend the meetings contact: Carolyn Briscoe 654-3110.
Naomi-Rebecca Circle
“Learn to live and live to learn.”
Naomi-Rebecca Circle meets at 3pm on the second Tuesday of each month, September–May, at the Activity Center at Clemson Downs. Members are Downs residents as well as women who live in the community. There are no meetings in June, July, August or December. Each meeting begins with a special learning program followed by a business meeting and closing with devotions. Love and support and the desire to keep learning are the major themes for this circle. You are welcome.

More about UMW
All circles come together two to four times a year for General Meetings. These meetings may include business items, mission studies, speakers, and special program emphases such as the “Call to Prayer and Self-Denial Observance.” Meeting times vary to accommodate a variety of schedules. Circles share hostess duties.
CUMW sponsors various mission projects and spiritual growth opportunities. Participation is encouraged as members are able. Some examples are Habitat for Humanity construction details, workdays at Clemson Child Development Center, special events and projects for the children at Helping Hands, World Day of Prayer prayer vigil, and mission studies based on South Carolina School of Christian Mission themes.
CUMW members may choose to support UMW financially by making a Pledge to Mission at their Circle meetings. These funds are used in local and global mission work. Our South Carolina mission projects are:
- Killingsworth - Provides supportive communities for adult women in crisis.
- Bethlehem Community Centers Enhances growth in democratic living, strengthens family life, promotes understanding between racial, religious and economic groups and stimulates desirable change in individuals and groups.
- Wallace Family Life Center - Provides educational, recreational, and religious programs for the enrichment of the community.
- Rural Missions, Johns Island - Provides for the needs of the children of Sea Island and migrant farm workers.
